2023 Chevy Bolt, The Reigning Low-Price EV Leader, Vanishing From Dealer Lots

The 2023 Chevy Bolt, the reigning low-priced leader in the American EV market, has all but vanished from most dealer lots in Los Angeles.

Queries to large Chevy Dealers in Los Angeles — one the largest EV markets in the U.S. — show new 2023 Bolts for all intents and purposes are on the brink of extinction in the wake of General Motors ending production of the vehicle. There are a few remaining — in many cases just one or two on dealer lots — but they will likely go fast, according to salespeople at Los Angeles dealerships I contacted. The Bolt EV has proven to be an incredible deal with the point of sale $7,500 tax credit factored in. That drops the base $26,500 1LT model to about $19,000 before taxes and fees, making it affordable to buyers who ordinarily couldn’t afford an electric vehicle.

“The 1LTs went first, then the 2LTs,” a dealer told me, saying the low price is the main factor. There are isolated exceptions, however, in California as a whole. Those tend to be large Chevy dealers that have traditionally been standouts by selling a disproportionate number of electric vehicles. After selling out of the cheaper 1LTs, Capitol Chevrolet in San Jose, Calif — south of San Francisco — has about 20 2LT Bolts left on its lot, a salesperson told me. The 2LTs are priced at $32,180 with a dealer discount of $1,250, bringing the price to $30,930. That price does not include the point of sale tax credit which would shave an additional $7,500 off the price after taxes and fees. And Allen Gwynn Chevrolet in Glendale, Calif has about half a dozen 2LTs left.

There are a smattering of 2023 Bolt EUVs, the higher priced and slightly larger variant of the Bolt, on dealer lots, particularly the higher end Premier models that tend to be pricey by Bolt standards starting at about $35,000.

General Motors stopped production of the Bolt in December of last year. In its stead, Chevrolet is now pushing the 2024 Blazer EV and the Equinox EV, with the latter positioned as a replacement for the Bolt with a starting price of $34,995.
