“Augmented reality” packaging thanks to artificial intelligence
Packaging says a lot, but it could say even more and more exhaustively. This is the thought behind the new packaging 5.0, which “could be used for fresh produce as well,” explains Loris Garau, founder of Dexa, the strategic consultancy company that promoted the idea implemented together with Itasystem from Brescia.
“The project lasted one year and a half, considering both market analysis and technical definition. The packaging in question works with a smartphone without the need for a specific APP: customers only need to frame the packaging with the camera on their phone to watch a video.”

But what is the difference from a QRCode? “There are many differences, actually. First of all, the content is recognized automatically by framing a box. Of course this is made possible by the fact that we have activated the system first and framed a single “activator” QRCode made available by the producer, the store selling the product or the promoter of the initiative. Thanks to AI, the system can recognize the packet without the need for a new one.”
“This means it is possible to use what already owned. In addition, we can instruct the recognition system so that, if a box contains strawberries, they are recognized as such while,, if it contains cherries, the phone will show information on that chain. It will no longer depend on the single packet, but the system can be instructed to reason and provide the information implemented.”
Consumers will have to activate the dedicated system and frame the pack. “It is a revolutionary communication system. You will no longer land on a website, this is ‘augmented reality’. The possibilities of application are endless, we have yet to think about them all. We can develop them together with the companies from time to time.”
