Michigan EV fast-charging infrastructure increased over 52% in 2023
Michigan’s electric-vehicle fast-charging infrastructure grew slightly faster than the nation overall last year, according to a new report by East Lansing-based Anderson Economic Group.
In 2023, the state’s number of public DC fast-charging stations increased about 52%. Nationwide, the number of public DC fast charging stations increased by 47%.
As of April 2, there were 311 public DC fast-charging stations and 1,141 Level 2 charging stations across Michigan, according to AEG, which used data from the U.S. Department of Energy Alternative Fuels Data Center for its report. In the U.S., there were 9,177 DC fast charging stations.
As of Tuesday, Michigan had 1,170 Level 2 charging stations and 316 DC fast-charging locations, according to the department.
“Nearly 20% of Michigan’s population now lives within a 10-minute round trip drive of a DC fast charging station, whereas more than 84% of Michigan’s residents live within a 10-minute round trip drive of a gas station,” said Cristina Benton, director of market and industry analysis at AEG, in a statement. “It is worth nothing that gas stations have multiple pumps while electric vehicle charging stations typically have two ports, significantly inhibiting the number of cars that can charge at once.”
Based on the charging station data, Michigan ranked seventh in the number of DC fast charging stations, AEG found. The top five states with the highest number of charging stations are California, Florida, Texas, Georgia and New York. When accounting for population, Michigan ranked 23rd in the nation in the number of DC fast chargers per capita.
