Artificial Intelligence is here to stay. Here’s how universities across Greater Cincinnati are preparing students.
FIVE. RICHARD, THANK YOU. WE APPRECIATE IT. 634 NOW NEW ON WLWT, WE’RE FOCUSING ON THE GROWING TRENDS INVOLVING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE ALL WEEK LONG AND HOW ITS IMPACTING OUR DAILY LIVES. MORE AND MORE. THIS MORNING WE’RE TALKING ABOUT HOW OUR LOCAL UNIVERSITIES ARE PREPARING STUDENTS RIGHT NOW ON HOW TO USE AI IN THE CHANGING WORKFORCE. WLWT NEWS FIVE’S DANIELLE DINDAK IS LIVE AT NORTHERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY WITH WHAT OUR LOCAL SCHOOLS ARE OFFERING. DANIELLE. YES. GOOD MORNING STEVE, AND I CAN TELL YOU, IF YOU TRAVEL TO THE DIFFERENT CAMPUSES AROUND THE GREATER CINCINNATI AREA, YOU WILL FIND A WIDE ARRAY OF DIFFERENT CLASS OFFERINGS AROUND AI, BUT IN PARTICULAR HERE AT NKU, IT’S ACTUALLY THE FIRST UNIVERSITY IN KENTUCKY THAT OFFERS AN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE MINOR. I THINK UNIVERSITIES, INSTEAD OF JUST FOCUSING ON TRAINING SPECIALISTS IN AI, I MEAN, WE’LL ALL HAVE MAJORS IN AI. THE INTEREST NOW IS ON DIVERSIFYING, REACHING OUT TO ALL THE OTHER DISCIPLINES HEALTH CARE, EDUCATION, BUSINESS. HOW IS AI TOUCHING THAT AND HOW CAN WE GRADUATE STUDENTS WHO REALLY CAN MASTER AI IN THEIR CAREERS AND IN THEIR LIVES? SEND OUT A NOW! THIS LEARNING INVOLVES EVERYTHING FROM CODE WRITING TO HUMAN PSYCHOLOGY. NOW, EVEN IF YOU DON’T ENROLL IN THE MINOR, YOU’LL STILL SEE AI IN OTHER SUBJECTS AS WELL. FOR EXAMPLE, WE KNOW IT’S BEING USED FOR TEACHING OUR FUTURE TEACHERS, AND OVER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI, IT ALSO OFFERS MULTIPLE PROGRAMS AND CLASSES THAT DEAL WITH AI. THESE STUDENTS ARE LEARNING, THOUGH IS NOT JUST TO USE AI. THEY ARE LEARNING HOW TO BUILD AI TO UNDERSTAND THE ALGORITHMS THAT UNDERLIE THESE AI SYSTEMS, TO TROUBLESHOOT THEM, TO IMPROVE THEM, TO MAYBE SOMEDAY COME UP WITH BETTER ALGORITHMS. UM, TO TO BE PART OF TEAMS THAT IMPLEMENT THESE VERY LARGE SYSTEMS. BUT ALSO, OF COURSE, TO BE PART OF TEAMS THAT ARE USING THESE SYSTEMS, BUT USING THEM IN A TECHNICAL WAY. NOW, NOW ALSO OVER AT XAVIER, I CAN TELL YOU THAT PROFESSORS ARE ALSO INCORPORATING AI INTO THEIR CLASSROOMS. NOW, MY BIGGEST TAKEAWAY FROM THIS IS ALL THESE PROFESSORS I TALKED TO SAID THAT WE WILL ALL BE USING AI IN OUR JOBS AT SOME POINT IN THE FUTURE. THAT’S WHY THEY REALLY WANT TO EDUCATE THEIR STUDENTS ABOUT THIS. BEFORE THEY GRADUATE. NOW RIGHT HERE AT NKU, I CAN TELL YOU THAT STUDENTS CAN START ENROLLING IN THIS MINOR COME THIS FALL.

Northern Kentucky University is the first university in Kentucky to offer a minor on Artificial Intelligence. But there’s a wide array of AI class offerings in Greater Cincinnati.“We’ll all have majors in AI. The interest now is on diversifying, reaching out to all the other disciplines health care, education, business,” Kevin Kirby, dean of the College of Informatics at NKU, said. “How is AI touching that? And how can we graduate students who really can master AI in their careers and in their lives.”The learning involves everything from code writing to human psychology. And, even if you don’t take the actual minor, you’ll see AI more in other subjects. For example, we know this is being used to assist and teach future teachers. The University of Cincinnati is also offering multiple programs and classes across multiple colleges that deal with AI.”These students are learning, though, is not just to use AI,” Ali Minai, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at UC. “They are learning how to build AI to understand the algorithms that underlie these AI systems, to troubleshoot them, to improve them, to maybe someday come up with better algorithms to be part of teams that implement these very large systems, but also, of course, to be part of teams that are using these systems, but using them in a technical way.”At Xavier, professors are incorporating AI into their courses. The biggest takeaway: AI is here to stay and it will impact all of our jobs in some way. It’s good to learn the good and the bad, which is exactly what students in these classes are doing. If you’re a student at NKU, you can enroll in the new AI minor this fall.
