Lucid’s mid-size ‘Model Y competitor’ slated for late 2026 production
Lucid Motors held its earnings call for Q1 this week, during which CEO Peter Rawlinson teased a future electric vehicle (EV) expected to take aim at the Tesla Model Y.
During the first-quarter earnings call held on Monday, Lucid focused on both the Gravity SUV, set to start production later this year, and an upcoming mid-size model, slated to be priced around $48,000 and start production in late 2026. When asked by one investor if Lucid planned to make an affordable EV that would compete with Tesla, Rawlinson suggested that the high-volume mid-size vehicle would be key to competing with the EV giant.
“We’re already competing with Tesla,” Rawlinson said. “But, wait until our mid-size comes out in late ’26; that’s when we’ll have a car at $48,000-$50,000, and that is the big one, the one that’s going to be really exciting.”
The upcoming vehicle was teased on the company’s earnings deck timeline ahead of the call, on the page detailing the Lucid product roadmap for the next few years. Set to be the next major launch following the Gravity, the mid-size vehicle is also expected to help lower costs due to Lucid’s work on making it as efficient as possible.
“I’m confident that we can achieve unrivaled levels of efficiency for this crucial mid-size class vehicle,” Rawlinson also noted on the call. “And again, I can’t stress enough that efficiency is the key to a small battery for any given range. And a small battery is a key element to lowering costs when it comes to making an EV.”
“I can’t wait to show you our mid-size game changer,” Rawlinson added.
Lucid has begun preparing to produce the Gravity SUV later this year at its factory in Casa Grande, Arizona. The company also highlighted its partnership with Aston Martin during the call, as well as discussing its Q1 production and delivery numbers, which were announced last month.
