I love you, mum: How this fintech founder got his entrepreneurial drive from his mother

In this special Mother’s Day series, David B Wang, the founder of Hong Kong fintech startup Krip, expresses how his mum has taught him to overcome seemingly impossible challenges in this personal letter

Dear Mum,

I’m embarrassed to admit that it’s been a long time since I wrote a letter to you, so I want to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to you for continuing to support me through my life’s ups and downs, particularly recently as I embark on an entrepreneurship journey.

A lot of what makes me who I am has come from you, and as I mature and become wiser myself, I realise that you’ve instilled many things in me from a young age that are paying dividends today.

Perhaps the one trait I admire the most is your unwavering persistence in achieving your goals. I remember seeing you coughing your lungs out from the renovation dust, as you launched a restaurant with no prior experience, facing seemingly insurmountable challenges over and over again. It was painful for me to see you go through the mountain of stress, yet you persevered, and the restaurant became a resounding success.

But what I am most proud to see you achieve is overcoming the mental health challenges you faced during the Covid-19 pandemic. Seeing you suffer every day, with everyone questioning your sanity and the legitimacy of your suffering, frustrated me, angered me and made my heart ache. Yet despite all the challenges thrown your way, you never gave up and committed yourself to the recovery process, which I know was not easy or comfortable.

I’m thankful that you made a full recovery—a testament to your willpower, persistence and commitment. I’m trying my best to replicate that mindset and attitude in my journey to become a successful entrepreneur myself, and I hope one day you will be equally proud of my achievements.

I just wanted you to know on this special day that I love you and thank you for inspiring and supporting me throughout my life. Here’s to many more celebrations in the years to come.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Your son,

David B Wang
