UND and VCSU hold forum outlining artificial intelligence plans – InForum

FARGO — Local universities are discussing their plans to keep up with the growing use of artificial intelligence programs next school year.

Representatives from Valley City State University and the University of North Dakota held a forum through the North Dakota University System on Tuesday, May 14, to go over lessons learned from the 2023-2024 school year.

Valley City State representatives say they’re putting together materials to help new students use AI programs positively.

“We want to help our freshmen during orientation to, if they haven’t used AI, we want to help them get involved with that so they’re on equal playing field,” said Joe Tykwinski, the chief information officer for Valley City State University.

For UND, student feedback indicated that they want clear guidelines about the use of AI for coursework.

“Advocating for transparency around why AI is or is not to be used for particular assignments or activities will really help students understand and make good decisions about what is appropriate,” said UND Writing Program Coordinator Anna Kinney.

The next North Dakota University System meeting on AI will happen in July.
