LG Electronics is set to unveil a home robot next month that incorporates Google’s latest generative AI, Gemini. This announcement follows LG’s partnership in February with Meta to form an “Extended Reality (XR) Alliance” and marks another strategic collaboration in the robotics field with Google.

According to industry sources on May 14, on May 27 LG Electronics will showcase its service robot, CLOi, equipped with Gemini at the “Google Cloud Summit Seoul 2024.” Both companies have been collaborating since last year to develop this product, which will be revealed next month and officially launched next year.

Gemini, introduced by Google at the end of last year to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, has surpassed human experts in “Massive Multitask Language Understanding (MMLU)” across 57 subjects, a test area that includes law and medicine. Thanks to Gemini, the LG robot is expected to learn users’ habits through conversation, providing accurate responses to ambiguous commands based on the situation.

Incorporating LG’s image analysis and autonomous driving technologies, CLOi will play an integral role in assisting users in various daily activities. For instance, it will remind users to take their medications at scheduled times and welcome them home like a pet. It can also detect the owner’s voice and facial expressions to recommend music that fits the mood.

With this collaboration, LG Electronics aims to aggressively target the global home robot market. Despite big tech companies like Google and Meta developing sophisticated AI services, these innovations require physical devices to be fully utilized.

LG Electronics boasts a global presence with 700 million household appliances and TVs installed worldwide, along with top-tier manufacturing capabilities. It has also secured significant customer-related big data, essential for powering AI services. The strategic alliance between Google and LG in AI robotics reflects a high potential for mutual benefits.
