Senate unveils roadmap to foster innovation and safety with artificial intelligence
A bipartisan group of U.S. senators, led by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, unveiled a comprehensive 20-page report on artificial intelligence (AI) on Wednesday. The report, developed after a year of forums with tech leaders, labor representatives, and civil rights advocates, outlines recommendations to foster AI innovation while establishing necessary safeguards.
The roadmap calls for an annual investment of $32 billion in non-defense AI innovation and proposes legislation to protect workers and consumer data. It emphasizes the need for Congress to address discrimination in AI algorithms and to support private sector employee training. The senators highlighted AI’s potential benefits, particularly in healthcare, while acknowledging its risks.
Schumer expressed confidence that the Senate could pass related legislation before the 118th Congress concludes in January. Immediate priorities include safeguarding elections from AI influence, with a Senate panel advancing bills requiring disclaimers on AI-generated political ads. Schumer plans to discuss the roadmap’s implementation with Speaker Mike Johnson.
