Wills Valley robotics team wins in coding | News
Congratulations are due to Wills Valley Elementary School’s robotics team, the “LEGO Alphas,” for an outstanding job in the first Lego Robotics Competition and Festival in Huntsville on April 6.
Together, the 2nd grade team members — John McRorie, Regina Acuna, Yoselin Vicente Pelico, Hughie Proter, Everett Sweeny, and Cooper Smith — won the Coding Trophy.
The team members were excellent communicators and gave an effective explanation of how the computer code they created controlled the model they built. They also explained how each member contributed to the presentation and the team in general.
This is the second year students from Wills Valley Elementary School have competed in this contest with other schools from the region. Last year, the team also brought home an award for coding. According to principal Sally Wheat, robotics classes quickly became a favorite for students at Wills Valley after the implementation of the STEAM program in 2021.
“The addition of this program has provided unique problem-solving opportunities for all our students as they participate in science and engineering activities during bi-weekly classes. Mr. (Houston) Henderson is doing a great job and we are very proud of how this team performed and worked together at competition,” Wheat said.
