World Telecommunication Day 2024: History, theme, messages to share

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is observed annually on May 17. This day was established to raise awareness about the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, as well as ways to bridge the digital divide. Events and Seminars: Various events, seminars, and workshops are organised globally to discuss the impact of ICT on different sectors, share best practices, and explore new technologies and innovations.

Some countries and organisations use this day to recognise significant contributions to the ICT field through awards and honours. Governments, NGOs, and corporations often launch educational campaigns to promote digital literacy and skills, especially among underprivileged communities.

THEME FOR THIS YEAR

Each year, WTISD has a specific theme relevant to current technological trends and issues. For example, recent themes have focused on AI for good, bridging the standardisation gap, and accelerating digital transformation in challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic.

HISTORY AND SIGNIFICANCE

The day marks the anniversary of the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the creation of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on May 17, 1865. In 1969, World Telecommunication Day was instituted by the Plenipotentiary Conference in Malaga-Torremolinos to commemorate the founding of the ITU. Later, in November 2005, the World Summit on the Information Society called upon the UN General Assembly to declare May 17 as World Information Society Day to highlight the importance of ICT. The General Assembly adopted this resolution in March 2006, combining the observance of both events as World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.
