Artificial Intelligence (AI)is an old concept that came into rise and achieving major milestone in the 20th Century. I have heard a lot of people talking about AI will snatch your job opportunity, well I somewhat have mix reaction to it.

I have used AI tools Chat gpt and Gemini a lot and came to a conclusion that they are more like a helping hand then a threat to us. With correct prompts and usage we can achieve great efficiency and mode of accuracy, but after all it’s a machine which lack human emotion and judgement. It is rigid in its behaviour. Though capable of giving most valuable research work it sometimes politely refuses us with the answers, it doesn’t understand what we say or may be our prompt is not as per his learning.

AI is still in its development phase or we can say its in its Artificial Narrow Intelligence phase, where it is working on specific task given by humans.

And one such task that many people talks about is writing and editing. Since being from Publishing background I have heard a lot of authors coming to me and saying “OH!! I can write it with Chat gpt”, “I don’t need editor, I can edit it with AI tools” my question is can you?

Here are few observations and conclusions I had drawn while working in this Industry and coming across people with such though process.

Editing requires sharp eyes, eyes that can understand the text not from its facts but also from the emotion of the writer. I can not deny that with AI Tools into action editing has come up with better sharp eyes, but what about human judgement and emotions?

1-Efficiency: With the help of editing tools, it’s easy to point out grammatical errors, repetition of words and even checking the plagiarism of content, this helps in maximising editors time more on other tasks like flow check, style consistency etc. AI is a great way of assisting editors with their work.

2- Specific Editing: Thanks to training models and advancement in AI, i have come across AI Tools that helps editor with specific editing. Content related to Non fiction, creative, academic and marketing, with the help of these AI Tools, we can command or prompt the AI to edit it accordingly

Prompt Example: Edit the mentioned paragraph, check for any grammatical error and make sure it is for academic purpose, hence keep the tone formal and fact based for this content.

This may not be the best prompt but it is one of them that can help us, in doing so.

3-Creativity and Nuance as a challenge: AI may be trained as per our requirement, still it struggles with subjective aspect of editing, aspect such as humor, it may not understand the humor a sentence is bringing. It’s same as sitting in a grouo with two people going on with internal jokes and rest of them unable to understand it and not being able to find a context and hence, not laughing at it.

Creativity is a very subjective thing, and AI is still not ready for it, it still doesn’t understand the kind of approach the content is having and keep most of the things formal. Lacking of creative mind of its own AI is not a good tool on which editors or writers can rely on.

4-Human Emotion and Judgement as challenge: I have been talking about this from the start. Human emotion is a very subjective and natural in nature. It is something limited to living being, nothing man made has ever shown emotion or judgement, and there is no living thing who is more complex when it comes to emotions and judgement than a Human Being.

With the kind of though process and perspective each individual have and the comprehensive and understanding humans show it is something that AI can not achieve, atleast not in near future. So Editing which requires a proper judgement, understanding and emotion of context require these things in an editor that AI as editor can not achieve.

With lack in originality and depth of human creativity it is not possible for AI to be a full fledge Editor or in my opinion writer.

Artificial Intelligence is a great Assistant for human , but it can not be a job stealer until and unless it is human. In my opinion to consider it as a threat, people can assume it to be a great assistant to us. Adapt it and become an early adapter to these tools.
