Sports retailer implements large-scale robotics solution at French site
Contract logistics provider GXO Logistics has implemented a large-scale robotics solution for a major global sporting goods retailer in Europe.
The solution has been introduced to enhance order processing speed, adaptability to seasonal demand fluctuations, as well as boost overall operational efficiency.
Rui Marques, managing director of GXO France, said: “This tote-to-person solution, integrated with high-density storage, enables high-volume picking, storage and operating efficiency in our warehouse.
“We’re always looking to leverage technologies that solve our customers’ increasingly complex global supply chain problems.”
The robotics solution spans more than 12,000 square metres and was installed to transform in the retailer’s omnichannel supply chain within the region.
It comprises approximately 500 autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) managing 70,000 bins on storage racks that are 5.5 metres tall. These robots are used for picking tasks, and since deployment have reportedly improved productivity, accuracy and site safety markedly.
The AMRs’ lightweight and mobile design allows GXO to reallocate them within the warehouse or to other facilities, accommodating seasonal demand changes.
“We’re pleased to have completed the successful implementation of this first-of-its-kind automated solution in Europe,” added Adrian Stoch, chief automation officer, GXO.
“The success here is a reflection of the power and scale of our global team, where we have leveraged expertise and resources across our global network to support this first-time implementation in a new market. Our operations-first approach to solution design has been instrumental in solving our customer’s challenges and furthering their strategic objectives.”
GXO’s ongoing investment in automation and technology continues to enhance safety and productivity for its customers worldwide.
In 2023, GXO significantly expanded its tech and automated systems by approximately 50% year over year. The company is also accelerating the integration of machine learning and artificial intelligence to further enhance productivity gains from automation.
