How Startup Spirii Is Improving Electric Vehicle Charging

According to the International Energy Agency’s 2024 Global EV Outlook, around 14 million electric cars were sold worldwide in 2023, and the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) predicts that electric vehicles (EVs) could reach 62% to 86% of global sales by 2030.

The IEA states that in 2024, the market share of EVs could reach up to 45% in China, 25% in Europe and over 11% in the United States.

Surging demand for EVs has propelled the market forward, with Q1 2024 sales outpacing the entirety of Q1 2023 by almost 1 million vehicles.

As the electric vehicle revolution gathers pace, a critical challenge remains: building a robust and accessible charging infrastructure.

Spirii, a Danish startup, is dedicated to accelerating the transition to eMobility by providing intelligent and user-friendly charging solutions. Founded on the belief that a seamless charging experience is key to widespread EV adoption, Spirii offers platform solutions designed to empower both businesses and drivers.

“We know what it takes to drive electric, and in all our efforts to develop the best charging platform solutions, we always put humans behind the wheel first,” states Spirii’s team on their website. “Our belief that eMobility can change the world is at the core of our brand, and we strive to innovate new ways of working together towards a future we’re all proud of.”

Meet Spirii

Headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark, the startup was founded in 2019 by Torben Fog, holds a PhD in Signal Processing, and Tore Harritshøj, who has previous successes in the utilities solutions industry.

Spirii’s funding history currently reflects a single seed round raised in March 2021 from Nordic Alpha Partners, a fund focused on scaling greentech startups. In 2023, Spirri won the Best Ggreentech Sstartup category of the Global Startup Awards.

Over the last couple of years, the startup has been forging partnerships with other actors in the industry, including Vital EV, GP Joule Connect, and Rolec. Among other things, the startup has been working on accelerating the electrification of the UK heavy transport sector, scaling German charging platforms, and accelerating EV charging in the European markets.

In February of 2024, Spirii was acquired by Edenred, a global services and payments platform. Both founding members stayed in their positions and the partnership will help strengthen Spirii’s industry leadership as it enters a new phase of global expansion.

“Together with Edenred, we will fast-track the transition to sustainable transportation,” said Tore Harritshøj, CEO of Spirii, “enabling companies and EV drivers to fulfill their electric mobility ambitions. Thanks to the relentless work of our Spirii team, we have become a leading industry player across Europe. Now, with Edenred’s backing, we look forward to further strengthening our products and offerings, empowering our existing partners and users with enhanced capabilities, and accelerating our expansion across market segments and continents.”
