Apple WWDC 2024 – Artificial Intelligence: CEO Tim Cook has finally announced that the company has stepped into the world of artificial intelligence. However, he did so in a very different way by taking a ‘unique approach’. In characteristic fashion, Cook did not admit that the company had missed any trick by taking to AI so late. Cook first highlighted the fact that Apple has been using machine learning for years to power its various products and that artificial intelligence was just a simple progression. In fact, the AI announcement was the last one of the day, and no, it did not start off with the characteristic old way of announcing something special right at the end of an event that Apple co-founder Steve Jobs had coined, which the company still uses in most of its launches -“One more thing.”

Not surprisingly, Cook added that what Apple was doing was much more special. He said, “It goes beyond artificial intelligence.” Cook added, “It has to be personal intelligence.” And yes, Apple has dubbed it “Apple Intelligence”. And yes, the company said that Apple Intelligence was available for free and as a by-the-way announcement, it revealed the tie-up with OpenAI with Siri getting a ChatGPT boost. In fact, ChatGPT can be accessed without opening an account.

Apple Intelligence has been described as a personal intelligence system that puts generative AI models in iPhones, iPads, and Macs that Apple says will set new standards of privacy for users. Notably, Apple Intelligence is at the core of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia.

“Apple today introduced Apple Intelligence, the personal intelligence system for iPhone, iPad, and Mac that combines the power of generative models with personal context to deliver intelligence that’s incredibly useful and relevant,” the company release said.

Cook added that he believes Apple Intelligence will be “indispensable” for everyone. He explained, “Our unique approach combines generative AI with a user’s personal context to deliver truly helpful intelligence. This is AI as only Apple can deliver it, and we can’t wait for users to experience what it can do.”

What Apple Intelligence can do is understand and create language and images, take action across apps, and draw from personal context to simplify and accelerate everyday tasks.

Language

Apple Intelligence can enhance writing and communicate more effectively. This will be possible via the new systemwide Writing Tools built into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. From rewriting, proofreading, to summarizing, everything would be doable through Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps.

Mail

With Priority Messages, a new section at the top of the inbox shows the most urgent emails. Across the Mail inbox, instead of previewing the first few lines of each email, they can see summaries without needing to open a message. This is backed up by the Smart Reply feature that enables a quick response.
