New high-speed electric vehicle charging stations to open across Maine | Local News
STATEWIDE — Electric vehicle owners are in luck — more charging stations are coming to Maine.
Governor Janet Mills announced this week that 17 new high-speed electric vehicle charging stations will open over the next year as part of the state’s Recharge Maine initiative — an effort to build an accessible and reliable network of electric vehicle chargers.
The total investment in the expansion is nearly $8.6 million.
According to Efficiency Maine, there are currently almost 500 charging stations available across the state, but these new ones will be Level 3 chargers, which are more effective.
“These are the high-speed charging types, so 15 to 20 minutes is going to get you a good charge to be on your way,” said Michael Stoddard, executive director for Efficiency Maine Trust. “This is an important stepping stone. This is the infrastructure people want to be able to travel all over the state.”
One of those stations is set to come to the Airport Mall in Bangor.
The rest of the locations span across five counties. Combined, the 17 sites will feature a total of 52 new chargers.
This set of chargers is intended to serve drivers on heavily traveled highways and roads such as I-95, U.S. Route 2 and U.S. Route 302 — but will also support outdoor recreation and university communities.
