Casper Council agrees to buy cybersecurity system
CASPER, Wyo. — On Tuesday, the Casper City Council authorized the purchase of an “intrusion detection solution” to thwart cyberattacks.
The council agreed to buy the ALBERT service for $32,870 for two years of service in a minute action during its regular meeting at its temporary chambers at The Lyric, 230 W. Yellowstone Highway.
The city has an IDS module as part of its firewall, and the Center for Internet Security recommended the ALBERT service, which is designed specifically for state and local governments.
It includes a 24/7 monitoring system by a dedicated security operations center.
“Once a potential threat is detected, it is evaluated by their response team, then escalated to City IT staff if action is needed,” according to a memo from several city staff members to City Manager Carter Napier.
The funding will come from a budgeted Wyoming Department of Homeland security grant awarded to the city for $40,000.
