A day in the life of a Group Product Manager at Yelp | Yelp

Meet Tala, a Group Product Manager on our Multi-Location Business Product Management team! Tala’s #FiveStarCareer journey began in February 2022, when she joined the team as a Product Manager (PM). During her time as a PM, Tala focused on building products and partnerships to highlight the value of Yelp ads for Enterprise businesses. 

Since then, she has become a Group Product Manager, where she manages a team of three talented PMs who are building and scaling products that enable our Enterprise Go-to-Market (GTM) team to forecast and predict campaign performance metrics and report on their success with attribution solutions across the marketing funnel.

What does a typical day look like in your role?

Every day is different, and that is what keeps things interesting! Typically, my days involve three focus areas. First, I support my team in achieving their goals and driving impact. This includes things like brainstorming solutions, practicing a presentation, or helping remove roadblocks for them. Second, I align and gather feedback from cross-functional stakeholders and ensure senior leaders are in the loop on important initiatives to ensure our roadmap drives the goals we’ve set to achieve as a business. Third, I’m always curious! This means I’m continuing to learn about the market, industry, and customer needs to remain an expert in the field.

What is your favorite part of the work that you do?

Working with talented people across Yelp is what I enjoy most. Though we are a remote company and our employees are spread across thousands of miles, I’ve had the privilege of building great relationships with folks across many teams from Product, Design, Engineering, Data Science, and GTM. Every person and team brings a different perspective to the table which is extremely valuable in building a strong product vision.

What I value about Yelp the most is its culture of authenticity as well as how it  empowers folks to be tenacious and unboring. We solve challenging problems for our users, and our culture allows us to see things from different perspectives. An example that exemplifies these values is our “ideas” email thread, where anyone can share an idea for a new product or feature!

What’s your #1 tip for staying productive while working from home?

I can easily be glued to my desk and laptop when working from home with folks across multiple time zones. To help me stay productive, I block off my calendar for things like eating lunch or walking my dog, and I schedule focus time throughout the day so that my heads-down time is most effective. I also enjoy going on a short walk or two throughout the day, so that when it’s time for my next meeting, I am refreshed and ready. I am grateful to have the flexibility to create a workflow that fits my working style.

I am proud to be a part of the Women in Product group at Yelp and admire Yelp’s support for women in technology. Seeing a community of women come together in a sector with notably less female representation is great.
