Ai-Da launches universal symbol for artificial intelligence
Ai-Da, a groundbreaking humanoid AI robot artist, and the figurehead for artificial intelligence (AI) in the UK, has designed a universal symbol that can be used to indicate if an image, video, advert, artwork, written text or audio has been generated using AI.
There isn’t currently a common sign to indicate content produced by artificial intelligence. Ai-Da is urging governments worldwide to come together behind a universal symbol that can be watermarked on all AI-generated content in order to prevent people from being misled into believing deep fakes.
Deepfake photos and videos of politicians and celebrities are becoming a growing threat to democratic elections. People can opt to support human artists instead of artificial intelligence by using the sign to show support for artists and creatives whose jobs are in jeopardy due to AI-generated content.
Encouraging people to question AI images
Ai-Da Robot’s symbol features an eye with the letters AI centred within it. The eye symbol represents the beneficial effects AI may have by “seeing” patterns in data that benefit humans, such as scans used in the medical field to diagnose cancer.
However, it also alludes to the widely recognised eye of Big Brother from George Orwell’s novel of surveillance, 1984, when the narrator states, “The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears.”
Ai-Da Robot hopes that the symbol will represent the idea that people should not simply accept “Deep Fake” content as authentic when they see it.
Ai-Da wants to support designers and artists whose work is being undermined by artificial intelligence and is happy for people to use the symbol freely without any royalties. In her capacity as an artist, Ai-Da aims to bring attention to the potential social implications of these technological advancements, a topic she has already addressed in the House of Lords in October 2022 and in No. 10 Downing Street in June 2023 with Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer.
Ai-Da has developed a labelling system that can facilitate the implementation of AI as it is embraced by various industries. She also created a traffic light system to indicate whether AI is beneficial, neutral, or dangerous.
Last year, Ai-Da gave a keynote speech at The United Nations AI for Good Global Summit.
Aidan Meller, Ai-Da’s creator, previously spoke to blooloop about her creation and creativity, the uneasy relationship between humans and machines, and how Ai-Da can help us answer some of the questions about the rise of artificial intelligence
