AMD Releases New Chips For Laptops And Desktop Artificial Intelligence-Based Businesses

JAKARTA – Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) released a new series of chips or semiconductors for laptops and business desktops optimized for artificial intelligence (AI) on Tuesday, April 16. They are doing this as an effort to expand their market share in the increasingly profitable “AI PC” market.

AMD reported in a press release, these chips are expected to be available on laptop platforms made by HP and Lenovo starting in the second quarter of 2024.

The AI PC enabled by artificial intelligence is capable of running large language models and applications powered by the technology directly on devices, not in the cloud.

AMD stated that its latest series, the Ryzen PRO 8040 Series, was built for a “business laptop and mobile workstation” while the AMD Ryzen PRO 8000 Series series is a desktop processor for business users.

AMD shares also rose more than 2% in early trading, following this announcement.

Experts estimate the possibility of PC’s market recovery depends on PC AI recognition, as consumers are looking for breakthroughs to improve their systems with new capabilities.

The emergence of a generating AI technology has led to high demand for advanced semiconductors that can be used to develop and run complex AI programs.

AMD faces fierce competition from Intel and Nvidia, who are considered leaders in graphics processing units (GPUs).

AMD introduced the 8000G Ryzen Series of desktop chips in January, aimed at heavy workloads associated with AI-based tasks.

On the same day, Nvidia revealed their own AI PC chips – “GeForce RTX SUPER” for desktops. They said Acer, ASUS, Dell Technologies, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung would release AI laptops featuring their technology.

Intel also said in January that they hoped to “send around 40 million AI PCs by 2024 only.
