AZULIK launches EK, a doorless electric car with fiberglass body and wooden steering wheel

AZULIK Mobility releases the first prototype of its concept electric car, EK. It has an open setting and no doors, and its fiberglass body curves as it draws inspiration from organic architecture. AZULIK Mobility’s doorless electric car, EK, has been designed and manufactured by Roth Fablab, under Roth Architecture, for AZULIK Real Estate’s new development, AZULIK Basin. A launch party on May 20th, 2024, welcomed the electric car on the new property, too.
Inside the vehicle, three people can sit: two on the sides with their legs stretched in front of them, and one driver seated in front of the wooden steering wheel. Between the two passengers, there’s a tabletop upholstered in waterproof nautical fabric, the same material used for the curvy seats. Even the steering wheel follows the organic and fluid architecture design with its spider-web-like style, machined in tropical zapote wood.

There’s also a reverse camera display and a digital tachometer, an instrument that measures the rotation speed of the electric car, inside AZULIK Mobility’s EK. 3D printing is the technique used for the button panels such as the electric ignition of the car, lights, and directional lights, all machined from tropical zapote wood. Even the central console comes from this wooden material, composed of a double cup holder, a wireless phone charger, and, even if the electric car is doorless and open, an ambient humidifier.
It’s worth noting that AZULIK Mobility’s futuristic-looking electric car only cruises at low speed, and this may make sense given that it is produced for their real estate property, AZULIK Basin. Like a golf cart, it is private transportation and can potentially be used to take guests from one spot to another within the property. The doorless EK has a 2,200W engine and a charging time between eight and ten hours. Its maximum speed is 40 km/hr and it can reach up to 100 kilometers on a single charge.

The first prototype of the doorless electric car was designed by AZULIK Mobility and manufactured by Roth Fablab in its headquarters in Francisco Uh May, Mexico. The manufacturing process involved professionals already working in digital, computational, and constructive processes. They worked hand-in-hand with experienced local artisans in Mexico and regional suppliers to make sure that the materials are locally sourced.
Design-wise, the fiberglass body with polyurethane foam casting was made with automotive paint application, thermoformed acrylic, and exterior grade textiles. Then, natural sealers were applied to the parts machined and carved using zapote wood. Thermoformed acrylic was also used for the windshield and medallion, while the emblems are handmade with ceramic. As of publishing the story, AZULIK Mobility’s doorless electric car, EK, only has one prototype, which was launched on May 20th, 2024.
