Generative AI

Beyond the Spider-Verse Producer Responds to Generative AI Fears

With generative AI becoming a more common sight, fans are voicing their concern about its use in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse were widely praised for their animation style and attention to detail from animators. So, producer Christopher Miller has talked about what fans can expect from the animation in the upcoming sequel.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will have “no generative AI,” says Christopher Miller

With AI showing potential to cut down on expenses, studios are enticed to use it to fasten the production process of movies and TV shows. However, co-producer Christopher Miller promised that “no generative AI” would be used in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Replying to an X (formerly Twitter) post, he wrote:

“There is no generative AI in Beyond the Spider-Verse and there never will be.”

He added that the franchise will continue to create authentic visuals with no “plagiarized” shots:

“One of the main goals of the films is to create new visual styles that have never been seen in a studio CG film, not steal the generic plagiarized average of other artists’ work.”

This response comes after the chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, Tony Vinciquerra, stated at a conference in Japan that Sony will be “very focused on AI” to create content and bring down production costs. As per The Hollywood Reporter, Vinciquerra stated:

“The biggest problem with making films today is the expense.” He added:

“We will be looking at ways to…produce both films for theaters and television in more efficient ways, using AI primarily.”

But co-producers Chris Miller and Phil Lord also spoke against AI in 2023. In an interview with Fortune, Miller said that AI doesn’t create anything “new and original.” It cannot innovate as it is “an imitator, not an innovator.”

So, fans can feel more assured that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will continue to maintain the high standards of the previous films in the series without the usage of AI.
