Craven CC introduces Small Business Center Generator to boost local entrepreneurs | News
Small business startups will soon have an opportunity to utilize office space and mentorship through the Small Business Center (SBC) Generator, a new initiative launching this summer at Craven Community College’s (Craven CC) Volt Center.
The project will provide invaluable resources and services to aspiring business owners, helping them reduce start-up costs, access funding, build market traction, and mitigate the risks associated with new ventures.
“We are thrilled to introduce the Small Business Center Generator as a vital resource for local entrepreneurs,” said SBC Director Dr. Jeff Wilke. “This program is designed to provide a supportive and resourceful environment that will enable small businesses to thrive and contribute to the economic growth of our community.”
The SBC Generator is located inside a newly refurbished commercial space at the Volt Center in New Bern and includes four 168-square-foot bays. Budding entrepreneurs who are approved for the program can lease one of the bays for up to two years, which will include the following amenities:
- Single-entry door with covered entrance
- Signage space for branding
- Roll-up garage door with opener for easy access
- Heating and cooling mini-split system for comfort
- Convenient parking for clients and employees
- Water-sealed space with insulation and drywall
- Adequate lighting and controls, epoxy flooring, and a small sink
- Security presence provided by the Volt Center
Craven CC began construction on the project in February and is set to open this summer, thanks to funding provided by the Golden LEAF Foundation.
“The SBC Generator exemplifies Craven Community College’s commitment to fostering entrepreneurship and supporting the local economy,” said Dr. Gery Boucher, Craven CC vice president for development. “While we are honored to host the Generator, we could not have made it this far without Golden LEAF’s support, and of course our partners at the City of New Bern and Craven County.”
Start-ups who are approved to set up shop in the Generator will have a range of benefits tailored to meet the needs of budding entrepreneurs, including onsite mentorship, educational resources, conference room access, and use of office equipment.
Eligible start-ups include small businesses engaged in construction or light manufacturing within Craven County.
Strong candidates who fall outside of these targeted industries will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Applicants will be reviewed and finalists will be invited to present their business plan in person for a finalized selection by the SBC director and advisory committee.
Approved candidates will then have an opportunity to pay a monthly usage fee of $4 per square foot the first year and $5 the next year, with a maximum term of two years.
