Cybersecurity camp hosted by FCPS teaches students valuable STEM skills
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – School’s out for the summer, but at Fayette County Public Schools, the learning doesn’t stop when the school year does.
Monday was the first day of Cybersecurity Summer Camp, an opportunity for FCPS students to learn cybersecurity and STEM practices.
“We wanted to during this summer provide our campers with an opportunity to really explore what cyber is all about,” shared Vee Pryor, Program manager for magnet and specialized programs.
Here, you don’t learn it by hitting the books. It’s taught through a game called KC7.
KC7 is a cybersecurity training program that’s meant to teach beginners cyber practices in fun ways.
You can play online at home, but this camp takes the game and brings it to life.
“This is actually a game created for post-secondary, and we said let’s try with elementary and middle school students. Last year, they were just blown away by how quickly they were able to learn the game,” shared Pryor.
For some, this training program is just a game, but for one volunteer, discovering KC7 changed his life.
“I played the game, got really good at it and actually learned how to do cybersecurity through that game, and had a complete career change from watch and jewelry repair into cybersecurity,” shared volunteer Jibby Saetang.
For elementary and middle school students, it may be too soon to decide what their career will be, but for Jibby Saetang, he hopes this camp can help encourage more kids to work in the field.
“That’s why I’m here because it’s fun, and I want everyone to do it!” Saetang said.
