Deadpool 3 Director Compares The Film to Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy has compared the film to Planes, Train, and Automobiles.
During an interview with Deadline, the filmmaker compared the upcoming Deadpool sequel to the classic comedy starring Steve Martin and John Candy.
“We wanted something that felt grounded, real…” he said. “You put Hugh Jackman in his most iconic character alongside Ryan Reynolds in his most iconic character; it’s more of a descendant of Midnight Run, and 48 Hours, and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles more than it’s a descendant of Airplane.”
A classic road movie and hilarious comedy, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is certainly a distinctive film to use as inspiration. Judging from the rest of Levy’s picks, it looks as though we can expect to see Deadpool and Wolverine hitting the road together. But don’t worry, you can expect Deadpool’s usual shenanigans, too.
“I wasn’t going to mess with the DNA of that franchise,” said Levy, who follows Deadpool 2 director David Leitch as well as original Deadpool director, Tim Miller. “Our movie is raw, audacious, very much R-rated and we went to great lengths to not shoot it on sound stages with digital environments,” he added.
Levy also offered an update on how filming was going before Deadpool 3 paused due to the ongoing Hollywood strikes. “Well, like the rest of our industry, or at least a large swath of it, we’re paused,” he said. “We’re halfway through filming Deadpool, co-starring Wolverine. It was a joy every day and that chemistry is as relentlessly awesome as we all hoped it would be.”
“Our crew and the rest of us are awaiting a fair and equitable deal that ends these strikes and puts this industry, inclusive of our movie, back at work,” he added.
IGN’s Deadpool 2 review gave it 7.8/10 and said: “Deadpool 2 eventually draws its disparate elements together, gains momentum, and pushes towards something more closely resembling a traditional finale. In keeping with the rest of the movie, it’s still fairly small-scale and character-focused, and surprisingly, it’s emotionally effective too. Despite the character’s trademark flippancy, there’s a real unexpected warmth to Deadpool 2. Not only does the sequel explore this flawed character, it firmly establishes him as a loveable and effective hero.”
