Electric Car Battery Turns Out To Be Awet And Rarely Replaced

JAKARTA – Many considerations affect consumer decisions to switch to electric vehicles, one of which is the price of the battery that tends to be high, even reaching 50 percent of the total car price. This means, when the battery is damaged, the replacement can cost a significant amount.

However, a recent study from Recurrent found that replacement of electric vehicle batteries was rare. Based on data collected from 2011 to 2024, only about 2.5 percent of battery packages were completely replaced.

According to a report from Teslarati, Tuesday, May 28, findings from Recurrent suggest that, except for the case of a large recall as experienced by GM with the Model of the0300 Bolt EV that was not included in this analysis, only about 2.5 percent of electric vehicle battery packages were eventually replaced.

“The increase in battery replacement rates usually occurs due to the age of old vehicles. For cars produced before 2015, the replacement rate reaches 13 percent, while for newer ones it is only about 1 percent,” said Recurrent.

The study also found that battery recall or battery replacement did not cause a significant financial burden for consumers. This is because battery replacement is generally carried out within a warranty framework and is handled directly by automakers, as was done by General Motors for the Hummer EV model and vehicles from Rivian.

“General Motors contacted me to ask for permission to use my battery for technical research purposes, and they offered replacement vehicles during the process. This was very satisfying for me and other Hummer EV owners,” said one Hummer EV owner.

Thus, until now, the frequency of battery replacement for electric vehicles is still relatively low.
