Electric vehicle charging station installed in Linden | News for Fenton, Linden, Holly MI
Linden — Linden’s electric vehicle charging station is up and running.
The charger is in the municipal parking lot behind Linden City Hall. Multiple parking spots have been marked for electric vehicles. It has two charging ports.
Director of Public Works Don Grice said installation was finished this week and customers can now use the level two charger.
Linden was chosen by Consumers Energy as one of 25 municipalities to receive a $7,500 rebate to install a charger in a public parking lot or curbside location near a residential area to encourage the use of EVs across Michigan.
Consumers Energy’s PowerMIDrive program focuses on providing rebates for EV chargers at public locations, apartments and other multifamily locations where EV owners can charge their vehicles overnight.
In a November 2023 Times article, Brian Wheeler, media relations manager with Consumers Energy, said Linden is one of the first municipalities in the state to receive an EV charging station.
“Linden has been one of the first I believe. Clearly, they saw a need in the community and we applaud them for taking action. We have a lot of kudos for Linden,” he said. “We think it’s a great location. It’s close to a residential neighborhood. It’s important because it will help provide access to people who need to plug in their vehicle.”
Consumers projects to be able to power one million EVs in Michigan by 2030.
“The new multifamily EV charging program offers $7,500 rebates to encourage property owners to invest in overnight charging for their tenants. The community charging pilot will provide a $7,500 rebate to 25 Michigan municipalities that install a charger in public parking lots or curbside locations, with a focus on places within one block of multifamily properties,” according to a Consumers press release from July.
Wheeler said they aim to remove barriers to obtaining EVs, which includes offering the rebates. The average cost for a level two charging station is $500 to $750. Consumers will provide a rebate of $500 for installation costs for homeowners who purchase a qualified level two charging station.
