EPA Opens Application Period for Electric Vehicle Grants
Nearly $1 billion funding available for organizations to convert vehicles in fleet to electric May 7, 2024
School districts and municipalities are among the organizations that can apply for electric vehicle (EV) funding as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced another round of EV funding through the 2024 Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicle Grant Program.
Separate from the Clean School Bus Program, the program represents the latest round of funding from the Inflation Reduction Act. The new grant calls for an estimated $930 million in funding that will be available to school districts, nonprofit school transportation associations, tribes, states, cities and territories.
In addition to school buses, organizations can use the funds to replace diesel-powered vehicles such as city transit buses and dump trucks, delivery trucks, utility trucks and bucket trucks with EV models.
The funding covers the difference between the cost of replacing a diesel vehicle with an electric version. Funds can also support purchasing and installing charging infrastructure and driver and mechanic training.
The application process opened April 24 and is open until July 25, 2024. Grant recipients are expected to be announced in November and awards delivered in January 2025.
