Ex-inmate turns entrepreneur, champions second chances
A former inmate has flourished into an entrepreneur, irrevocably stating that the past does not limit future potential. Turning his experience into a stepping stone, he has created a skill-training business for fellow ex-prisoners and champions universal access to opportunities to reform and reintegrate.
His firm acts as a conduit to alter societal perceptions and reaffirms the idea of a second chance. Having overcome similar struggles, he stands a beacon of companionship, redeeming societal perceptions and breathing life into the concept of a fresh start after repaying societal debts.
Back when he was an accountant and barista, he impressed his manager and customers with his transparency about his past, turning his legal history from potentially hindrance into an advantage. His manager validated his work ethics in court, drawing on his commitment, his impressive customer service skills, and his resilience.
Upon being released early due to COVID-19, he faced numerous challenges including reduced flexibility at work, stagnant wages, tension-filled treatment by colleagues, and the constant dread of a surprise visit from his probation officer. Despite these, an opportunity emerged through an online entrepreneurship course from a non-profit, Inmates to Entrepreneurs (I2E), stirring in him the idea for his ambitious coffee project, ‘Queen Coffee Bean’.
Applying skills gleaned from the I2E course, he developed a business plan that revolved around selling high-quality, fair-trade coffee beans and launched his venture into the competitive coffee industry. The project aimed not just at fulfilling enthusiasm for entrepreneurship, but also fighting societal stigma by creating job opportunities for fellow ex-inmates.
With ‘Queen Coffee Bean’ he intended to create a platform from where every cup of coffee served carries tales of fortitude, seeding empathy and understanding in society.

His venture soon grew, attracting a supportive community, leading to expansion through strategies like pop-up shops and brick-and-mortar stores. He worked with local coffee producers, promoting sustainability and thereby, supporting livelihoods of many families.
His venture was not only a commercial success but an avenue for honing his professional skills. He discovered and sharpened his leadership skills, fuelling other’s entrepreneurial spirit. The venture’s sustainable growth and the community support highlighted the enduring worth of passion, tenacity, and collective encouragement.
Now a successful business owner of Queen Coffee Bean coffee shop in High Point, North Carolina, he serves distinct coffee beans and a dedicated customer base, signifying a past can pave the way to growth.
