Flowers Hospital celebrates over 10,000 robotic surgeries

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) – Flowers hospital is celebrating over 10,000 robotic surgeries since introducing this piece of modern medicine in 2008.

15 years ago, surgeons at Flowers explored a new development where technology meets medicine.

It is called robotic surgery.

“It is completely different than it is now. Robotics has really changed the way that we practice surgery,” Dr. Steve Fendley, a surgeon with the hospital said.

Now, over 10,000 cases later, the hospital is recognizing their advancement in this field.

”We are glad that we are a leader in robotic surgery and we are very proud of the success we have had in order to take care of our patients in need of our services,” Jeff Brannon, the CEO at Flowers, said.

The robots are used in multiple procedures such as weight loss or gall bladder surgery.

The doctor-operated robots allow for more precision during the surgeries, resulting in many benefits for patients.

”Shorter hospitals stay, shorter recovery, quicker time to get back to work or other activities, less chance of infection, less chance of other problems that can occur during surgery,” Fendley said.

Dr. Fendley, who has been in the field for years, thinks it also has extended his career, getting rid of the strain that comes from standing at an operating table for hours on end.

With years of experience from doctors like him, Flowers has now become a place for surgeons across the state to learn this unique technology.

“We still have doctors who want to come in and learn a particular operation and they will come in and watch us do that. It is right here in Dothan Alabama that we have that honor to help other surgeons get started in robotics.”

The hospital averages 100 robotic surgeries every month.

Flowers now has three robots to use for procedures.
