Michael Murphy of Fortinet highlighted the partnership’s objective to strengthen global cooperation in maritime cybersecurity, while also expanding the scope of OT security and digital innovation in the industry.

Cyber threats

The collaboration between the two companies is in response to the adoption of UR E26 and E27 by IACS in April 2022, aiming to safeguard ships from internal and external cyber threats. These regulations, effective from July 1, 2024, mandate secure integration of Operational Technology (OT) and Information Technology (IT) equipment and system integrity assurance from third-party suppliers.

Fortinet’s role will involve designing robust maritime cybersecurity solutions, optimizing existing platforms for maritime environments, and providing training to ensure compliance with the new regulations. Leveraging its OT Security Platform, Fortinet aims to fortify OT security across the Purdue model, ensuring visibility, network separation, endpoint protection, authentication, threat detection, and security operations.

Jongung Choi of Samsung Heavy Industries emphasized the growing significance of cybersecurity in shipbuilding, aiming to establish an innovative OT security system during construction.
