Generative AI

Global survey on Generative AI conducted among 700 IT and data decision-makers, including 100 IT & data decision-makers in India

Iron Mountain, a global leader in storage and information management services and trusted by more than 225,000 organizations around the world, including over 90% of the Fortune 1000. In a global study (attached) commissioned by Iron Mountain, Vanson Bourne explored with IT and data decision-makers how their organizations are using and plan to use generative AI, the barriers they face, and whether having a chief AI officer (CAIO) and a unified asset strategy could help accelerate adoption while lowering enterprise risk.

The research also uncovers the importance of a unified asset strategy for digital and physical assets to help leadership drive generative AI success. The survey was conducted globally among 700 IT and data decision-makers including 100 IT & data decision-makers in India.

India specific insights:

The majority of organizations are already using generative AI:

  • 92% of organizations are already using generative AI in some capacity
  • Some of the ways companies are currently using AI include:
  • Creating content (85%)
  • Interacting with customers (79%)
  • Developing code (67%)

Despite this strong uptake, businesses are grappling with challenges relating to the technology, particularly around data management and protection, which is creating barriers to innovation and success. The top challenges highlighted in the research that generative AI brings to organizations include:

  • Protecting and managing the data and other assets created by Gen AI (76%)
  • Planning for IT resources to train and implement Gen AI models (75%)
  • Ensuring that generative AI models are accurate, unbiased and transparent (72%)

To turn these challenges into opportunities, respondents see the need for a specialized AI technology leader, such as the emerging role of the chief AI officer (CAIO)*:

  • 100% say that a focused AI leader can accelerate the adoption of generative AI within organizations
  • When asked what a focused AI leader can help to achieve in relation to generative AI, the top response was working with partners and providers to select the best solutions to support Gen AI initiatives (88%)
  • 98% of respondents agree that a unified asset strategy – that is, unlocking intelligence from both physical and digital assets and optimizing protection and management of those assets across their lifecycles – is critical to the success of generative AI

* A chief AI officer is defined as a senior executive responsible for strategy and implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) use cases within an organization.
