Google brings Generative AI to search; introduces expanded AI Overviews, organised search results, and more | Technology News
Google Search AI Overview | Google SGE | Google IO 2024With billions of people using Google to find information online, the search engine has been at the forefront of the internet for well over a decade. Now, the tech giant is bringing a new Gemini-powered feature that shows AI-powered answers for your search queries.
Google introduced Search Generative Experience (SGE) as an experimental feature a few months ago, but the Gemini-powered functionality is now available for everyone.
The new Gemini model customised for Google Search integrates the AI-powered chatbot’s integrated advanced capabilities and can help piece together all the information you need.
Until now, the AI overview feature was automatically generated, but Google says a new update to the Search Labs will soon let users customise the functionality by offering options to simplify the language and break it down in more detail. The new feature will be limited to English for those living in the United States and is handy if you are trying to look up information about a new topic or want to explain it to your kids.
Another useful feature coming to AI Overview is the ability to ask Google Search to plan something. For example, users will soon be able to search for things like “create a 3-day meal plan for a group that’s easy to prepare” and Google will show you different recipes from various sources across the web. These complex queries can also be customised to your preferences.
Google also seems to be introducing a new feature that uses AI to automatically organise search page results. This particular functionality will initially be available for dining and recipes, with support for movies, books, hotels, music, shopping, and more added sometime later. Also, users will soon be able to search with videos. Similar to the aforementioned features, this will be available for Search Labs users in English in the United States and expand to other countries over time.
