Growth & Jobs | Dough Jamaica’s journey: From kitchen creations to entrepreneurial success | News
SHARI TOMLINSON’S journey with baking and entrepreneurship is a testament to her passion and determination. It began with sharing her creations with friends in high school four or five years ago. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to study entrepreneurship and business management at the University of Technology, Jamaica. Reflecting on her beginnings, she recalls, “I created my cookie recipe, and my friends insisted I should sell these! I hesitated for a while, but in 2020 I decided to launch the business, Dough Jamaica, while working from home.”
While initially struggling with cake baking, Tomlinson admits, “Cakes weren’t my strong suit at first. I made them for family and friends, and over time I improved. Today, I enjoy experimenting with new creations. I’ve introduced a monthly cake sampler box with four different flavours. I’m driven to explore new ideas.”
Tomlinson’s offerings are a testament to her versatility and creativity. Her menu caters to various tastes, from cookies and pies to cheesecakes. She emphasises her strong rapport with customers, attributing it to her creations’ irresistible taste and aesthetic appeal. “I strive for simplicity in my designs and flavours, describing my style as minimalist,” she concludes.
Inspired by her brother Tomo, a Zip jock/TikTok sensation who helps her create a lot of her content on her IG, Tomlinson has amassed over 10,000 followers on Instagram and is often featured in Tomo’s skits on TikTok.
Recently, Gold Seal Flour gifted some bakers, chefs, and foodies some flour to experiment with. Tomlinson decided to bake a vanilla cake using Gold Seal Flour for the first time. She shares, “Though I typically use Gold Seal for rolls and pies, I opted for a classic vanilla cake, and the feedback was fantastic.”
“We offered a few bakers and chefs some Gold Seal flour to experiment with. Even though it is all-purpose, it is unbleached and pre-sifted, helping you save loads of time when baking,” shares Marielle Wade, brand manager for Gold Seal Flour, manufactured by Seprod.
Today, Tomlinson is expanding her flavour offerings beyond classics like chocolate, red velvet, coconut, and lemon, and now features innovative options like lychee and coffee.
