At the VEX IQ Worlds tournament, where hundreds of students from around the world gather to compete for robotics, STEM and arts accolades, two Oak Cliff schools brought home trophies.

The Margaret B. Henderson Elementary School QueenHornets took third in the Math Teamwork Challenge Division. The award is given to two teams on the third place alliance in the Teamwork Challenge Finals Matches at VEX Worlds.

All four Henderson teams (Queen Hornets – Math Division, Robo Hornets – Science Division, Princess Hornets- Arts Division and Baby Hornets – Engineering Division) qualified for worlds through competitions from October to January, bringing in 27 trophies this season. The Queen and Robo teams qualified for the world competition through their fifth and sixth place rankings in the national competition, while Princess and Baby qualified at a state competition.

As the fourth year that the school has offered robotics teams and the first year that all four have advanced to the world championship, robotics coach Javier Alvarado considers attending the competition a “huge success,” he told the Advocate before the tournament.

“This year has been an exceptional one,” Alvarado said. “We competed in over 10 competitions and ranked high in them all.”

In the technology competition, Peeler Elementary School won the Energy Award for their TNT Robotics team. Energy awards are given to teams that demonstrate extraordinary enthusiasm by maintaining a high level of excitement and energy throughout the event, showing passion for robotics that enriches the event experience for others and by students demonstrating teamwork and effective communication skills.

The event took place at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center from April 25 to May 3.
