Indian Government Blocks Spoofed Calls


The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) of the Indian government, in collaboration with Telecom Service Providers (TSPs).

A directive issued to TSPs to block incoming international calls displaying spoofed Indian mobile numbers. This directive applies to all incoming international calls reaching Indian telecom subscribers. The recent rise in cybercrimes and financial frauds perpetrated through spoofed calls prompted this action. There’s no specific date mentioned, but it’s a current initiative. To combat the growing problem of spoofed calls used for scams, impersonations, and fraud. The DoT and TSPs have developed a system to identify and block these malicious calls. Additionally, the Sanchar Saathi portal’s “Chakshu” facility allows users to report suspicious calls.

Indian citizens can expect some peace of mind as the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) cracks down on a major annoyance – spoofed calls disguised as Indian mobile numbers. This initiative aims to curb the rise in cybercrimes and financial frauds perpetrated through such calls.

Fraudsters often manipulate caller ID to display seemingly familiar Indian numbers, gaining the trust of unsuspecting victims. These calls have been used for various scams, including impersonating government officials, threatening fake arrests, or creating panic about deliveries containing narcotics.

The DoT, in collaboration with TSPs, has devised a system to identify and block these malicious calls before they reach Indian subscribers. This builds upon previous efforts that already blocked spoofed calls appearing as Indian landline numbers.
