Kenton County celebrates National Public Safety Telecommunications Week

The week of April 14 through 20 will be known as National Public Safety Telecommunications Week in Kenton County, as declared by the Kenton County Fiscal Court Tuesday.

“I very much appreciate the acknowledgment and the unending support that we get from the fiscal court,” said Ashley Hawks, director of Kenton County Emergency Communications. “Your support continues to inspire me to do better and move forward.”

Over the past six months, the Kenton County 911 dispatch center has been working with NorthKey, a 24/7 mental health crisis hotline, to improve its services. Since utilizing this service, Kenton County Emergency Communications said they have received 99 calls to the emergency 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. 

“We have been able to alleviate the stigma by sending uniformed police officers or sending uniform firefighters to residences that do not require those types of services,” said Hawks. “People don’t need to be transported to a hospital or transported to a jail. We have found that to be incredibly beneficial to the community.”
