LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — May is Small Business Month. It is an opportunity to support and celebrate the contributions of small businesses to our society.

Small businesses and start-ups not only drive the American economy, but they also help keep the American dream alive.

Las Vegas native Sherita Rogers is the owner of two small businesses in the valley.

After years of climbing the corporate ladder and working for the government, she said it was time to turn her dreams of being her own boss into a reality, creating The Exquisite Company, focused on event design and décor and My Sister’s Sweets, a corresponding dessert business.

“Entrepreneurship runs in my family, so it was destined to happen,” said Rogers. “However, I’m a mom of three young children and (a wife) and I wanted to spend more time with them.”

The two businesses provide customized event planning services, from tailored set-up and décor to handmade gourmet treats. She said the idea of including desserts in her business plan was inspired by her sister, who passed away more than a year ago.

“She was the one who actually inspired me,” said Rogers. “We started out making caramel corn and then it led to the puffed corn, and we just enjoyed baking together for fun. And I was always like ‘We have to do more with this, let’s turn it into a business.”

A few months later, Rogers received her business licenses.

“It’s really special. Now, every time I bake, I think about her, I hear her voice. I hear different things that she’d say,” said Rogers. “That’s why I named it My Sister’s Sweets because really, all my recipes came from her.”

Rogers said she’s grateful to be among the brave go-getters in our community using their gifts and talents to serve others. She’s also grateful to the community for their continued support of local businesses like hers.

“It’s just really important that we stay strong as a community together, support one another, and just know that small businesses are essential,” said Rogers.
