Meet the 25 media leaders and innovators of the inaugural AI Journalism Lab cohort

The AI Journalism Lab at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, created in collaboration with Microsoft, is thrilled to introduce its inaugural cohort of 25 journalists, media leaders, academics, and artificial intelligence practitioners. These individuals are finding ways to navigate and harness generative AI in ethical ways that reinforce trust from communities and increase impact for their news organizations and the larger media industry.

“We’re thrilled to welcome these exceptional newsroom leaders and journalists to our program and eagerly anticipate witnessing the innovative projects they will embark on,” said Program Lead Nikita Roy, who is also the host of the Newsroom Robots podcast and is an ICFJ Knight Fellow. “Their diverse perspectives and expertise will undoubtedly shape the future of AI-powered journalism, inspiring impactful change within our industry.”

Our cohort comes from numerous countries across the world, including France, United States, United Kingdom, Norway, Philippines, Germany, Mongolia, India, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, and Nigeria. They come from all levels of management in editorial, business, audience or tech within news organizations or academia.

“By harnessing the potential of AI technology, journalists will have the tools needed to streamline operations, maximize efficiency, and foster long-term sustainability,” said Noreen Gillespie, Journalism Director at Microsoft’s Democracy Forward.

The Lab will run from April 26 to June 28, 2024, with a break for the summer, and from September 27 to October 11, 2024. The program is virtual except for a mandatory in-person kick-off at the Newmark J-School in New York May 3-4.
