Meta Augments Generative AI Assistant With Llama 3 LLM and New Features

Meta has integrated its new Llama 3 large language model into its Meta AI assistant and embedded the new tool across its Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp, along with several other new features and upgrades. The augmented generative AI assistant has also been deployed beyond its initial release in the U.S. to nearly a dozen countries globally. This deployment extends the reach of Meta AI beyond the United States, marking a pivotal moment in the company’s quest to make AI more accessible worldwide.

The upgraded Meta AI still converses with users to answer questions and plan events using Bing, but now also sources Google for answers. Using Llama 3 makes it faster and, according to Meta, better at answering queries. That’s crucial since the AI is now accessible within the search bars of Meta’s platforms, with the idea being for users to interact with Meta AI without navigating away from their ongoing conversations or activities. To make the assistant even more available, Meta also launched a new website to converse with Meta AI at, appropriately enough, ‘meta.ai.’

“We’re releasing the new version of Meta AI, our assistant that you can ask any question across our apps and glasses. Our goal is to build the world’s leading AI,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a video announcing the upgrade. “We’re upgrading Meta AI with our new state-of-the-art Llama 3 AI model, which we’re open sourcing. With this new model, we believe Meta AI is now the most intelligent AI assistant that you can freely use.”

Meta AI’s expansion also includes an upgrade to the text-to-image feature Imagine. The tool will now create images from text prompts as users type them out, as seen here. Users can also ask Meta AI to recreate an image with different styles, animate still images, or produce a sharable gif based on the image.

With Meta AI’s integration into the Meta ecosystem and upcoming deployment on Meta Quest and Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, the company aims to establish its AI assistant as a ubiquitous presence across various platforms and devices. While not mentioning its rivals, Meta clearly had OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Microsoft’s Copilot generative AI assistants in mind when designing Meta AI’s expansion. The integration of Llama 3 and other enhancements across Meta’s products signals the company will fight for as big a slice of the AI assistant market as possible, leveraging its already enormous global reach across multiple platforms to attract and keep users who might wander to generative AI tools elsewhere.
