MTN Ghana celebrates World Telecommunication Day with a renewed commitment to digital innovation
MTN Ghana has observed this year’s World Telecommunication and Information Society Day by celebrating the transformative power of communication technology.
On this significant occasion, MTN Ghana reaffirms its dedication to connecting people, enabling progress, and fostering digital inclusion across the nation.
This year’s theme, “Digital Innovation for Sustainable Development,” aligns seamlessly with MTN’s Ambition 2025 strategy, which aims to lead digital solutions for Ghana and Africa’s advancement with a focus on Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.
This theme highlights the critical role of technology and innovation in achieving long-term socio-economic growth and prosperity in Africa.
It emphasises the importance of leveraging digital innovation in the telecommunications industry to provide innovative products and services, address global challenges, drive socio-economic empowerment, and enhance digital and financial inclusion.
Over the past 30 years, MTN has been a pivotal player in driving digital innovation across Ghana and Africa.
MTN’s contributions span various sectors, including enhancing access to education and healthcare, boosting economic growth through digital skills and support programmes, innovating within the fintech and digital economy sectors, fostering strategic collaborations, and investing significantly in infrastructure. These efforts have been far-reaching and invaluable.
As a company deeply rooted in Africa, MTN’s journey has been one of innovation, resilience, and collaboration. Through its innovative products, corporate social investments, and substantial infrastructure investments, MTN has set the pace for a brighter digital future.
Strategic partnerships with governments, businesses, and other stakeholders have been central to MTN’s success, particularly in areas such as financial inclusion. Reflecting on these achievements, MTN extends its gratitude to all stakeholders who have been part of this remarkable journey.
On this occasion, MTN Ghana’s CEO, Stephen Blewett, highlighted the critical role of the fintech ecosystem in Africa’s digital revolution and economic development.
Speaking at the recent 3i Summit, he stated, “Africa’s fintech ecosystem is the engine that will drive its digital revolution and economic development in the coming years. Fintech can stimulate local economies and drive progress across the continent in several ways – financial inclusion, innovation and entrepreneurship, job creation, cross-border transactions and payments, digital identity and security, agriculture and rural development, government services, investment, and funding, as well as digital and financial literacy.”
Blewett also called for robust policy and legal frameworks to foster the establishment of innovation hubs and digital sandboxes. These platforms are essential for incubating, testing, and rolling out new products, and they underscore the need for deliberate collaboration between governments and businesses to achieve sustainable development.
Such hubs will nurture the next generation of African entrepreneurs by providing the necessary resources, environment, and training in the digital space.
As the world celebrates the Telecommunication Day 2024, MTN Ghana reaffirms its commitment to harnessing digital innovation for sustainable development. By embracing technology as a force for good and leveraging its transformative potential, we can collectively shape Africa’s progress.
Today, we celebrate the power of connectivity, the promise of technology, and our unity of purpose. Together, we shape a future where every Ghanaian can thrive in the digital world, affirming our belief that “everyone deserves the benefit of a modern connected life.” MTN Ghana thanks all its customers for their continued support and wishes everyone a Happy World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.
