New study on the future of battery production for automobiles in Europe
New study on the future of battery production for automobiles in Europe.
The automotive thüringen (at) network is today publishing a new study and market analysis that was carried out in collaboration with the Chemnitz Automotive Institute (CATI). The study examines in detail the future prospects and challenges of battery production for automobiles in Europe, a critical factor for competitiveness in the field of electromobility.
Key findings of the study:
• Increasing demand for battery cells: Given the exponential growth of fully electric vehicles, the demand for battery cells in Europe will increase dramatically – a capacity of up to 800 GWh is expected by 2030, which corresponds to an annual increase of approximately 25%.

• Need for localization: In order to minimize geopolitical supply risks and strengthen Europe’s technological sovereignty, the localization of battery cell production in Europe is essential. Currently, 93% of global manufacturing capacity is controlled by non-European manufacturers.
• Technology development and cost reduction: Through ongoing technology development, a 40% reduction in battery costs is possible by 2030, which will significantly increase competitiveness.
• Risks and opportunities for suppliers: The study identifies specific risks in relation to the realization of announced manufacturing capacities, but also shows significant opportunities for European suppliers and service providers across the entire value chain.
Rico Chmelik, The managing director of automotive thüringen, said:
We are faced with the challenge of building a complete and competitive battery value chain that increases the availability of new technologies and at the same time secures our capacities for the future.
“The research and development is new. The battery architecture is not just a technical necessity, but a strategic one that will strengthen Europe economically because it is also about reducing its dependence on critical raw materials, which currently have to be procured under geopolitically sensitive conditions, by building up our own manufacturing capacities and regional ones It is high time that we move decisively in this direction and make the necessary investments in research and infrastructure. We are also at a critical point where quick and decisive action is required every day Hesitation further weakens our position in global competition. It’s not just about serving the market – it’s about shaping and leading it.”
