Next Chevy Camaro Could Be An Electric Car
Chevrolet’s all-electric plan, at least for its current crop of modern offerings, has been to electrify popular models, like the Silverado and a few of its SUVs. Current EVs from Chevy include the Equinox EV, Blazer EV, and Silverado EV, but the lineup could change in the future. Unlike Ford, which used the Mustang as inspiration or an all-electric crossover called the Mustang Mach-E, Chevrolet wants to bring the Camaro back as an electric car.
The report comes from MotorTrend, who spoke with GM President Reuss in regard to the possible return of the Camaro. The outlet claims that Reuss wants to bring the Camaro back as an electric car that channels its roots. Instead of being a high-powered car that’s meant for track use, Reuss wants the Camaro to be a pony car with broad appeal instead of being something that attracts enthusiasts.
At the moment, Reuss didn’t provide a lot of information on the future all-electric Camaro. He told the outlet that the vehicle would have a similar starting price tag to the current Equinox EV that has a starting price tag of $34,995 for the upcoming base model. The electric Camaro is also expected to be eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit, which would drop its price closer to the $27,000 mark. If true, that would make the electric version of the Camaro much cheaper than the gas-powered model that starts at $32,495.
While most publications, including MotorTrend, thought that Chevrolet would revive the Camaro nameplate as an electric crossover to compete with the Mustang Mach-E, it looks like things have changed after speaking with Reuss, though nothing has been confirmed yet.
“From the way Reuss talked about his vision, we get the sense that the car-versus-crossover debate hasn’t been settled within GM,” claims MotorTrend.
Based on MotorTrend’s report, it sounds like the Camaro is definitely coming back as an all-electric vehicle. We don’t expect the electric Camaro to come back as a coupe, though, Instead, the Camaro could make a comeback as a sedan with coupe styling. This would broaden the Camaro’s appeal, as it would give the brand a sedan after Chevy’s decision to discontinue the Malibu. Chevy could follow in Dodge’s footsteps with the Charger Daytona and offer the Camaro in both sedan and coupe body styles.
With Chevrolet still discussing what kind of body style the all-electric Camaro should be offered in, it sounds like the EV is still well off in the distance. MotorTrend claims that the Camaro EV will be based on Chevrolet’s Ultium architecture, but Reuss believes that battery production needs to be scaled up to bring costs down to make the proposed price a reality. That is going to take some time.
While the all-electric Camaro is still a few years away, at a minimum, it’s exciting to get some information about the EV. Chevy did say that the Camaro would return when it announced the death of the sixth-gen model and now, we have confirmation of the car’s comeback.
