Orange High School reaches finals of international robotics competition
PEPPER PIKE, Ohio – The Orange High School Robotics Team 1787, The Flying Circuits, reached the finals at the FIRST Robotics Championship, an international competition, April 17-20 in Houston.
The OHS team advanced to the first round of the finals as part of an alliance with two other schools, according to the Orange City School District’s communications office.
The Flying Circuits also brought home Rockwell Automation’s Excellence in Engineering Award.
Orange won the Buckeye Regional competition in March in Cleveland to qualify for the world championships.
Chicken or the egg?
An incubator containing more than a dozen chick eggs has been placed at the Pepper Pike Learning Center between the Orange Inclusive Preschool and Orange Early Childhood preschool.
Sponsored by the Orange Elementary PTA, many activities are planned surrounding the chicks, including reading various stories about eggs and chickens and participating in math games involving statistics and counting days until they are hatched, which is anticipated the first week of May.
The public can even help name a chick by voting online at orangeschools.org/hatchlings.
Bands earn state ratings
The Orange High School bands achieved an outstanding showing at the recent Ohio Music Education Association state contest.
The OHS Symphonic Band earned an Excellent (II) rating in Class C, and the OHS Wind Ensemble earned a Superior (I) rating in Class A. This is the third year in a row the OHS Wind Ensemble earned a Superior at the state competition and the second time in three years that both bands qualified and went to state.
Orange High School is the only school in the 24-school Chagrin Valley Conference to have multiple bands qualify for the state contest, according to a news release from the district.
Dancing Classrooms
Brady Middle School eighth-graders took to the gym floor to demonstrate the skills the students learned in 10 weeks of dance lessons during physical education class periods as part of a 15-year collaboration with Dancing Classrooms.
Featured dances included the merengue, foxtrot, rumba, tango, salsa, waltz and swing. Throughout the performance, students had the opportunity to share their thoughts on the program through writings and readings.
The school’s partnership with Dancing Classrooms began after a districtwide Waiver Day focusing on brain development suggested a direct link between formal dancing, physical activity, novelty and brain growth.
In addition, the positive social aspects of formal dance, including tradition, respect for partners and an appreciation for classical music have made this a worthy and valuable opportunity for BMS students.
Students honored at Reflections

Each year, students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12 are invited to submit projects that are reflective of a pre-selected theme and represent the various arts.
