Pella Regional Introduces Robotics Joint Replacement Surgery

Pella Regional Health Center now offers Mako SmartRobotics™, an advanced joint replacement surgery that helps your surgeon create a personalized joint replacement surgical plan. Joint replacement for knees or hips is a treatment option designed to relieve pain caused by joint degeneration.

“We are proud to be the first hospital in southeast Iowa to offer this highly advanced SmartRobotics™ technology,” said Bob Kroese, CEO, of Pella Regional Health Center. “This addition to our orthopedic service line further demonstrates our commitment to provide the community with outstanding healthcare.”

First, the patient will have a Mako 3D CT scan so the surgeon can create a personalized plan based on each patient’s unique anatomy. Then, in the operating room, the surgeon validates the plan, makes any necessary adjustments, and uses the robotic arm to guide the joint replacement procedure and position the implant. By targeting only the damaged part of the joint, the surgeon helps protect the healthy bone and position the implant with greater accuracy compared to manual replacement procedures.

“With Mako SmartRobotics™, I know more about my patients than ever before, and I’m able to cut less. For some patients, this can mean less soft tissue damage and for others, greater bone preservation,” said Dr. Nathan Nicholson of Pella Regional Health Center. “It’s exciting to be able to offer this transformative technology to perform joint replacements. Mako can help us plan for better outcomes, like less pain and shorter recovery times, compared to manual joint replacement surgery.”

If you have tried medication and conservative treatments to treat your joint pain but haven’t found relief with those options, you may be a candidate for a total knee, total hip, or partial knee replacement.
