Pennsylvania’s Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Upgrade

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has unveiled the Electric Vehicle Charger Reliability and Accessibility Accelerator (EVC-RAA) program. This initiative, funded through the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), aims to enhance the state’s electric vehicle (EV) charging network by repairing or replacing non-functional EV chargers. PennDOT released the funding opportunity on May 23, 2024, with the proposal submission period opening on July 2, 2024, and closing on August 14, 2024. Eligibility for funding extends to 174 locations listed by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

The program allocates $5 million to update these chargers to meet FHWA standards, which require each station to have at least four charging ports and maintain over 97% uptime. This effort is part of a broader strategy under the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, which seeks to establish a cohesive EV charging network and facilitate data collection and access.

Further details about the EVC-RAA program and other federal grant opportunities through the BIL are available on PennDOT’s dedicated web pages.
