QU launches entrepreneurship center

QUINCY (WGEM) – Quincy University students will soon have an opportunity to make more connections within their major and local business.

Quincy University officials announced the formation of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation on Wednesday.

Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Sarah Vordtriede-Patton said this new department is meant to reach out to students across campus and connect them with various majors. She said aside from business majors, it will incorporate art, health sciences, engineering and other majors.

She said this will help inspire creativity and help them make connections in the business world.

“It’s how to engage them in and make them active participants in whatever their major is. Again, emphasizing the innovation and what kind of ideas they can discover,” Vordtriede-Patton said, “It partners very well with our push for undergraduate research. It’s just about how people in their discipline rather than just learn about it.”

She said the center will teach them entrepreneurship skills, such as making pitches for business ideas. She said it will also help them connect with local businesses.

She said they saw a need in the community. The center will allow students to connect with local businesses and serve as a resource for businesses.

She said the goal is to help students and grow the local workforce.

“These people that would go through the Center for Entrepreneurship would be leaders in the field and actually creators. So, they would not only be employees they would be an employer of people. So, it would really help keep industry here,” Vordtriede-Patton said.

She said this will allow students to see the problems businesses face and develop creative ideas to help businesses. It will also encourage students to stay in Quincy and be a part of the workforce.

She said they also plan to host events and meetups that students, clubs and businesses so they can learn more about entrepreneurship.

She said they are still working on the curriculum for the center, but they plan to announce the director for the center in a couple of weeks.
