Recent accident spurs concerns on electric vehicle laws | News
With smaller electric vehicles booming more popular, they’re starting to enter roadways, sidewalks, and other public spaces more frequently. Electric bikes, scooters, golf carts, and other personal conveyance devices all share one thing in common, and that is that they share the spaces they maneuver through with larger vehicles and pedestrians. “It comes down to what are the laws, what is it that you have, and with whatever it is that you have, there are particular laws that deal with that. I caution people to make sure that they’re up on what the laws are concerning whatever mobility device that they have,” said St. Marys Police Chief Jake Sutton.
With the rise of these kinds of devices, there has been an increase in people of all ages using them. Recently a Celina teen was writing an electric skateboard when a car collided with them, causing life-threatening injuries which resulted in the teen being life-flighted. As part of the Celina Police Department’s investigation, they found that the teen was wearing dark-colored clothing at night when this occurred which made them hard to see. “The Celina Police Department would like to take this time to remind people that these non-licensed electric skateboards, scooters, and similar toy vehicles are just that, toys,” reads in part a statement put out by the department
