The Sharon Robotics team recently won big at the FIRST World Championship in Houston – with the help of a small LEGO robot.

The team took home the Innovation Project Finalist Award, which recognizes a team utilizing diverse resources for their project to help gain a comprehensive understanding of their program.

The award is for the team’s Adapt-a-Reel, which is an adaptive fishing device created for people affected by upper arm amputations and/or limited fine motor skills.

Built with LEGOs, the robot was designed and redesigned with the help of physical and recreational therapists, the PA Fish and Boat Commission and staff at Whole Life Services of Hermitage.

A provisional patent for the device was secured for their creation, according to a news release from the robotics team.

Additionally, the team’s coach, Dave Tomko, won the Coach of the Year Award. This is given to coaches and mentors that inspire their teams to do their best, both as individuals and together.
