Guðmundur Fertram Sigurjónsson was named Entrepreneur of the Year at the annual conference of the European  Wound Management, EWMA, in London this week.

The aim of the award is to reward individuals for their unique entrepreneurial efforts and for their contribution to major improvements in wound care and quality of life for wound patients.

In the EMWA press release, it is stated that Sigurjónsson’s work has revolutionized the field of wound healing based on tissue regeneration.

The goal is to become the most common treatment

Under his direction, the medical fish-skin company Kerecis has developed medical products from fish skins, which are used, among other things, to treat persistent wounds – for example, due to diabetes, burns, cutting wounds, and various types of injuries. The wound skin is a natural product derived from cod skins at Kerecis’s high-technology center in Ísafjörður.

The product helps the human body regenerate damaged tissue and heal wounds. Clinical studies show that wound resistance heals wounds more quickly than comparable products and shortens treatment time, making the product extremely cost-effective.

Tens of thousands of people have been treated successfully with the pain of Kerecis, most of them in the US.

“It’s an amazing feeling to see the invention improve patients’ health and quality of life. It’s the most inspiring thing and that’s why the goal is to bring the product to market worldwide, so it becomes the most popular treatment for serious wounds around the world,” said Sigurjónsson when he accepted the prize.
